Fort Denison Kids’ Club, School Holiday activities
Due to Fort Denison closed for annual maintenance in July, the Kids Club will be running activities in the October school holidays. In October 2011 Fort Denison Kids’ Club will be hosting a series of school holiday events in association with the creators of the recently published children’s story, Stanley the Manly Ferry. It isn't very often you can read a book and all of the characters featured in the book are surrounding you! It makes for a very special day out, one your kids will remember for a very long time. The events are suitable for children aged 6-12 years and include transport to and from the island, a lunch box for kids, a sit-down lunch for parents and a take-home,signed, first edition copy of Whales in Sydney Harbour. All participants will be able to watch the cannon fire at 1pm and enjoy a preview reading by the author of Whales in Sydney Harbour! Participants will also be able to purchase tickets for a tour of the Martello Tower.
About the Books
Whales in Sydney Harbour is the follow up book to Stanley the Manly Ferry, the first of The Ferry Tales, an upcoming series of children’s books in which many of Sydney Harbour’s icons come to life. The Manly Ferries are both Stanley and his sister, Myf; Old Wise Fort Denison is the grandfather of the Harbour; and the sails of the Opera House are Joan and Bennelong. These are just a few of the wonderful characters in this gorgeous new series. The beauty, history and adventures of the Harbour are told through their eyes.
The stories are the creation of James Whiley, a teacher from the Northern Beaches. James says “the stories came from a love of Sydney Harbour and the fact that there seem to be surprisingly few children’s books that celebrate the life and beauty of the Harbour.” Once he had written the text of Stanley the Manly Ferry, he searched for an artist to bring his characters to life. He looked for artists who had previously been painting Sydney Harbour and found Manly local, Patrick Hawkins. Once the images were completed the two self-published and self-distributed Stanley. Impressively in a depressed book market, the first print-run of two thousand copies sold out in 4 months.
The second book in the series, Whales in Sydney Harbour! will be read at the events on Fort Denison during the October 2011 school holidays.
